Geeky Movies I’m Looking Forward to in 2018
2018 looks like it could be the year of nerdy movies and I’m already looking forward to a number of them. We’ve had some great geek flicks this year and as a huge Spider-Man fan, it’s going to take a lot to pip 2017.
I’m both a lover and hater of trailers. I find that trailers today either spoil a vast majority of the story or they overhype something too ridiculous levels. Many of the latest movies have been overhyped so much and have ultimately flopped at the box office. That said, I still couldn’t help myself watching them when I see them on YouTube.
Looking at the releases next year, I’ve whittled down a list of my top 5 most anticipated geek movies of 2018. Like always, there is no particular order, there just the films I know ill be getting tickets for as soon as I can.
Avengers: Infinity War Part I
The Marvel movie franchise is forever growing and you can bet that Avengers: Infinity War Part I isn’t the only Marvel Studios movie to be released next year. This movie will have audiences start to see the end game, the culmination of every movie in the series before it. If that doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will.
Following the fall out of Captain America: Civil War, it looks like our heroes are going to face their biggest challenge yet, and at their most vulnerable point. This movie is said to be on such an epic scale that they had to split into two parts. A few of set videos and photos have shown us a little teaser, but so far we currently don’t have a public trailer, but you can bet I’ll be watching it when we do. Even despite my guaranteed attempts not to.
Avengers: Infinity War Part I is due to release in April 2018, with the second part arriving a year later.
Ready Player One
Everyone who’s serious about gaming and loves nostalgia should read the novel Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. In March 2018 we will get the movie adaptation of the novel, which has been directed by Steven Spielberg.
Ready Player One is set in the near future where the world has basically gone to shit. Due to a lack of resources and housing means that everyone is looking for an escape from reality. Thankfully a technology genius gave the world that escapes in the form of a virtual one known as The Oasis. People work, play and live all with this virtual reality world, spending all of their time and money wearing a VR kit.
What unfolds is essentially a treasure hunt as the creator of the Oasis passes away and plans to leave the company he created to the person who can solve his easter egg by collecting 3 keys. Basically, it’s a geeky heaven story filled with 80s nostalgia references. We already have a trailer, which you can watch above and I must say as someone who’s read the book. This looks amazing.
Fox finally got a Marvel movie right when they created Deadpool. The third wall breaking merc with a mouth returns in 2018 for his second movie and hopefully one that’s every bit as good as the first one.
Deadpool 2 sees our favorite funny man take one Cable who will be played by Josh Brolin. We already have a teaser trailer and a few images to give us a flavor of things to come. If the movie is anything like the promotional material, then I’m expecting a ride that’s just as good as the first one.
We don’t have a fixed release date for Deadpool 2 as of yet, nor do we know much about the plot, but the movie is confirmed for 2018. I’m expecting to see a full trailer dropped by the end of this year or very early next year. Stay tuned and watch the space.
We got a first look at the new Tomb Raider movie not so long ago in the form of a trailer. My first impressions are actually pretty good, despite my vast worries what this movie could turn out like. If you played the Square Enix reboot games then it seems like they’re trying to mimic that gritty story somewhat. Good idea, if you ask me.
Tomb Raider is due to be released in March of 2018 and video games have a very long history of becoming poor movies. Whether this latest addition will break that trend, it’s really hard to say.
The trailer doesn’t give you much to go on, other than the clear similarities from the video game. For this to be a success I think it needs to be a gritty movie, that pulls no punches and doesn’t treat its audience like simpletons. I have high hopes for this movie, but I also have a lot of worries.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Only recently did we get the official title for this next movie in the Star Wars Story franchise. Now title Solo: A Star Wars Story, this movie will obviously follow the journey of young Han Solo and his adventures. I’m predicting the story of how he met chewy and how he came to own the Millennium Falcon, and perhaps even showing the Kessel run in 12 parsecs?
I really enjoyed Rogue One, and I know it had its issues, but I felt like this was a Star Wars film with a lot more grit and weight behind it, even if there were some unnecessary cameos.
Solo: A Star Wars Story will look to continue that trend and although I’m not sure how I feel about seeing someone other than Harrison Ford as Han, I’m sure we will get an enjoyable movie nonetheless.
We don’t have a release date, trailer or know much else about the film, but you can bet that a December release date is the most likely one. As is the Star Wars tradition.
