The Best Families in Gaming
As we gather around with our family to give thanks, this holiday season we thought it’d be fun to honor some families in gaming. These families have been some of the true treasures in the gaming world. They have shed light on many adventures and gave us fond memories of their interactions with each other. Listed below are a few you’re sure to know, some we hope you know, and one you may not be so familiar with. Either way, these guys have grown us over the years and we’d love to see more of their adventures together.
Mario and Luigi are two of the most recognizable stars in gaming. These two have been assisting each other for a few decades now. We have seen both of the siblings star in plenty of games together as well as many of their own titles. We have followed them all over the world and seen them compete time after time in competitions. They even have been to quite a few different parties together. These two are the perfect pair of siblings and the first family everyone jumps to when talking about video games.
The fanbase surrounding Mario even has a lot of theories to the twos personal relationship. Some people even say that Mario is a horrible older brother. The two do seem to have quite a bit or rivalry outside of the titles they are seen working together in. Luigi also seems to always get the short end of the stick between the two. All in all though whenever either of them gets into trouble the other one is on the way to the rescue. That being said they do live together so who knows maybe they just need each other to pay the rent?
If you have never played Megaman Legends then you should go buy it from the PSN store right now. This game features one of the weirdest families you will ever have the pleasure of meeting and it’s great. You know the really popular Servebots that Capcom loves to stick in their games? They come from the Tron family and are pretty much treated like their children within the games. The servbots, however, aren’t the weirdest member of this loving band of related pirates as the crew gets pretty weird without them. How do you ask though?
Well, first off there is T-bone who is the dad that’s always in debt. He is the captain of the pirates and one of the ditziest video game dads you will ever meet. Then there is Bonne his toddler robot son that loves to make baby noises and punch things to death. Lastly, there is the fan favorite Tron who totally doesn’t have a crush on Megaman or anything. She is the smart tech genius of the family who pilots giant robots and stuff. The family even has their own spin-off game where you do illegal actions like rob a bank to bail the dad out of his hefty debt.
Ok, so this is a little bit spoiler ridden if you haven’t beat the main story yet. Fallout 4 starts with your family and you rushing to safety to avoid the bombs being dropped. The game then sees’s your spouse get murdered and has you awaken from cryosleep in search of your missing son. Your character will go through all types of hell to find him including a radioactive desert full of ghouls and even taking on a guy named Kellog who is an annoying boss fight. When you do finally find your son though you get a pretty big surprise.
As it turns out the baby/child you have been looking for is all grown up. By all grown up we mean he is a grown man known as father. That’s right you are Father’s father. As weird as it is to say that’s just how it is. Father is in control of the institute and asks you to help him realize his dream. Sadly, he is sickly and you don’t get to spend to much time getting to know your son before taking over his spot to run the errr…new family business in his place.
This whole game has a huge push for the family aspect. Most of your neighbors in Harvest Moon are families that all have their own issues and work hard together to support their household. Many of these families feature quirky characters players have fallen in love with time and time again. The games also have an amazing relationship feature that allows you to get closer to players and eventually make your own family within the game.
In Harvest Moon, you can choose to woo one of the dateable suitors for marriage. To do this you will need to spend time with them daily and build up your farm to support two people. Once you are married you can focus on having children. In some Harvest Moon games, you can even watch your children grow up and help raise them into certain career paths.
Banjo Kazooie is all about family. The whole game saga starts when Banjo has his sister Tootie get kidnapped by Gruntilda. This causes Banjo and his friends to infiltrate her home to get back his sister in one piece. There is also Kazooie who I slightly assume is either a squatter or in a really weird relationship with Banjo. Either way, this is a cute story that has a warm fuzzy feel to it.
The game will have you jumping through all types of the world to collect enough items to progress. The duo even makes all types of new friends while trying to make it to the top of the lair to finally save Tootie. What does the Gruntilda want with her you ask? Simple, to suck her youth out so Gruntilda can be hot again! Yep, that’s the first games whole plot right there.
