What’s next for PUBG and what’s needed?

The juggernaut that is PlayerUnknown’s BattleGround’s doesn’t seem like it’s about to slow down anytime soon. As the newest and biggest thing in gaming grows it has to make you wonder what is next for this gaming giant.

With patches and minor bug fixes coming on a regular basis, I thought now would as good a time as any to talk about some of the bigger changes coming to PUBG in the near future.

With such a large player base and let’s be honest, limited game modes, the longevity of PUBG could be cut short if new content isn’t introduced in the immediate future. Whilst the game still feels fresh and offers much replayability, I think that time is of the essence and a new map and or content patch could really go along way to ensuring this game’s future as one of the biggest games of all time.

So what’s next for this latest online sensation? Let’s take a look what coming and what’s needed:

New Map

The first thing to talk about is the new map. Now we know there is going to be a new map, and we already know what part of it looks like following a tweet from PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene.

There has also been a sneaky datamine by a Reddit user, which appeared to show the new maps name as ‘Murderland’ as well as its layout. None of this has been confirmed or denied by the team behind PUBG, but data mine’s often come with a large helping of truth. If the data mine is correct and we do indeed get to fight our way around Murderland, then we can expect a map that is roughly the same size as the one we have now.

Murderland is a desert-based map, with plenty of high-rise buildings sprinkled around settlements throughout. From what I’ve seen so far there looks like there could be a lot of variety in this map, especially for inner-city fighting. Buildings with 10 or more stories are shown on some of the screenshots, but it’s not yet clear whether all floors can be accessed. My guess is probably not, as this could take you upwards of 5 minutes to clear an entire building.

From what we know about the new map, everything looks positive. I just hope we get it sooner rather than later.

Optimisation & Stability

PlayerUnknown’s BattleGround’s is still a game in early access, so bugs and minor issues are to be expected. With that said, PUBG still has some fairly major issues when it comes to the optimisation and stability.

The UI in PUBG’s pre-game menu is rife with its issues in performance and stability. There are often occasions where the UI will need refreshing multiple time in order for you to ready up, which can even result in you having to relaunch the game entirely.

There are also instances where some of the assets don’t render correctly, meaning are unable to enter buildings and even see all the loot as you parachute in. Some people I’ve spoken to have more issues than I have, but they are running the game on a GTX 1070.

It’s these little issues and performance fixes that will go a long way to improving PUBG’s overall experience. If there’s one thing I can say, I do have confidence that issues like this will be fixed by the time the game is out of Early Access.

More Weapons & Character Customisation

With the recent new patches came some new weapons, but like all greedy PUBG players, I want more. Already the game has a wide range of weapons to find and so far it’s enough, but some more wouldn’t hurt.

It seems that there is a pattern with almost every player regarding the best weapons to use. The Scar-L, the AKM & M14 seem to be the most common favorites and this limits the game’s variation. Some balancing work is definitely needed with weapons, but I’m sure this will come in time.

When it comes to character customisation, this is probably a more personal request than one I’ve heard amongst other players. Personally, I like being able to identify with my avatar and I think having more customisable options would go a long way.

Yes, I get that argument about who needs a unique face when you have a level 3 helmet but having more faces and hairstyles to choose from never hurt anyone. At the moment PUBG has a lot of character clones and I know this isn’t a game that focuses on your avatars look, but I would be nice to have a few more options.

The same applies for the clothing in the game. I’ve put plenty of hours into PUBG and all I seem to get from my boxes are red t-shirts. A more frequent rare loot drop would be appreciated, along with more clothing options.

New Vehicles

New vehicles are coming to PUBG and so far the one we know about is a VW style campervan. A tweet from PlayerUnknwon showed off the work in progress vehicle stating there are another two coming with it. This new vehicle is likely to drop with the launch of the new map, which is said to be a few months away.

This new campervan will still only be able to hold a maximum of 4 players, which is to be expected and boasts plenty of side windows, suitable for drive-by shooting. There are already a decent amount of vehicles on offer for PUBG and this makes me wonder whether these vehicles are likely to be map specific, or at least some of them anyway.

Personally, I can’t wait till me and my squad is rolling around the desert in our campervan.
